The Routing and Switching Revolution: IP Infusion and UfiSpace Are Transforming the European Market

Poland

The traditional telecommunications market and the Data Center segment have been dominated by closed, monolithic systems for years. However, this situation is rapidly changing. The concept of disaggregated networking is gaining traction, where efficient hardware and advanced network software operate as independent yet perfectly integrated elements.

Although for many Polish enterprises and operators, open networks based on the synergy of IP Infusion and UfiSpace brands or even the already known EdgeCore are a market novelty, in Western Europe, this solution is already breaking popularity records. Over 600 global deployments with leading cloud service providers, Tier-2/Tier-3 operators, and in modern 5G xHaul infrastructures confirm that we are dealing with a mature technology that redefines existing performance and flexibility standards. Now, this proven revolution is also available in Poland.

Pillars of open architecture: Meet IP Infusion and UfiSpace

The success of this solution is based on the division of competencies between two global technology leaders:

  • IP Infusion (software): Provider of OcNOS – one of the most mature and stable network operating systems (NOS) in the world. OcNOS provides a full stack of advanced routing (L3) and switching (L2) protocols, ensuring carrier-grade reliability. It offers a full range of functions, starting from basic routing protocols like OSPF or IS-IS and ending with advanced MPLS or SRv6.
  • UfiSpace (hardware): A Taiwanese manufacturer of advanced whitebox network devices. The company builds its solutions based on the most modern and powerful ASIC processors on the market (e.g., Broadcom), providing hardware with uncompromising throughput.
  • EdgeCore (hardware): Like UfiSpace – a supplier from Taiwan, often having very similar solutions, differing in the number of ports.

Specific hardware solutions for demanding infrastructures

The UfiSpace and IP Infusion architecture covers the full spectrum of modern network needs, offering specialized devices for specific tasks:

  1. Modern Data Center

In the data center segment, port density, scalability, and efficient energy management are crucial. Top-of-the-Rack (TOR) switches from UfiSpace allow for full deployment flexibility from 1G to 400G.

When designing new Data Centers, engineers can precisely choose the direction of airflow (Airflow: Front-to-Back or Back-to-Front) by adapting devices to cold and hot aisles, even within the same device.

The OcNOS system natively supports Spine-and-Leaf architecture, offering seamless deployment of BGP EVPN technology over a VXLAN underlay, enabling flexible L2 network stretching and full client traffic separation in multi-tenancy environments.

  1. Aggregation and core of operator networks

For telecommunications operators, protocol maturity is key. OcNOS in the Service Provider version (OcNOS-SP) provides full support for L2VPN technology – both point-to-point (VPWS) and multipoint (VPLS) connections, based on LDP/BGP signaling.

Importantly, these platforms support modern Segment Routing mechanisms (SR-MPLS / SRv6), allowing for smooth migration from older transport architectures to future-proof, programmable networks.

  1. Time synchronization and 5G O-RAN networks

UfiSpace is an undisputed leader in Fronthaul solutions and cellular router gateways (Cell Site Gateways – S9500 series).

For small, rapidly developing private 5G networks or O-RAN architectures, the manufacturer offers compact devices equipped with 10G/25G (SFP28) ports. These devices have built-in oscillators with the highest stability (Stratum 3E / OCXO) and hardware support for advanced SyncE and IEEE 1588v2 (PTP) profiles, meeting the stringent Class C and Class D standards (phase accuracy below 100 ns).

OcNOS and UfiSpace in ISP Networks: A Response to the Challenges of Modern Operators

Local and nationwide internet service providers (ISPs) are facing unprecedented price pressure and a rapid increase in bandwidth demand. In this segment, the duo of IP Infusion and UfiSpace becomes a true game-changer, offering operator-grade stability and flexibility that was previously reserved only for the most expensive closed platforms:

  • Scalable and Reliable Core (BGP & MPLS): OcNOS-SP provides a full, mature BGP routing table (devices typically have 32GB RAM and 2-4GB deep buffers) necessary to handle exchange points (IX), which are often the first choice for ISPs and many upstream providers (Transit). Combined with an advanced MPLS stack (including RSVP-TE and Segment Routing), operators gain full control over traffic engineering, ensuring low latency and no bottlenecks in the backbone network, with SRv6 deployment just around the corner.
  • Flexibility and Port Density: No more rigid interface configurations. UfiSpace hardware allows for a flexible approach to aggregation. The same physical racks and devices can handle diverse speed mixes (from 10G/25G at the edge and aggregation layer to 100G and 400G in the backbone ring). This architecture supports multi-rate ports, allowing for smooth network expansion without the costly “forklift upgrade” (replacing entire chassis). Often, “100G only” devices have a port converted to physically 4 ports of 10G/25G – allowing for the use of long-distance modules – WDM, DWDM, which we offer, not just splitting a 400G cable into 4x100G.
  • Hardware DDoS Attack Resilience: Security and continuity of operation are priorities for every ISP. OcNOS, working directly with Broadcom ASIC processors inside UfiSpace devices, implements advanced traffic filtering mechanisms at the hardware level (Line-Rate ACL). With support for technologies such as BGP Flowspec, the system allows for automatic propagation of blocking and mitigating rules for volumetric DDoS attacks directly at the network edge, protecting the infrastructure from overload and downtime before malicious traffic reaches the core. OcNOS is tested with leading solutions using FlowSpec, including Community/Free versions.

Technological and Business Advantage Over Traditional Competition

Choosing the duo of IP Infusion and UfiSpace provides tangible benefits that traditional, closed manufacturers cannot offer:

  • End of Vendor Lock-in: By purchasing OcNOS software, you invest in a system that you can transfer to another certified hardware platform in the future. You are independent of the pricing policy or product lifecycle of a single supplier.
  • Drastic Reduction of TCO: Separating the purchase of the hardware layer from system licenses allows for a reduction in capital (CAPEX) and operational (OPEX) costs by up to 40-50%. Spare components (AC/DC power supplies, Hot-Swap fan modules) are much cheaper to maintain.
  • Full Programmability and Automation: OcNOS is designed with a modern Infrastructure as Code (IaC) approach in mind. It offers a full, northbound API based on NETCONF, RESTCONF (YANG data models) standards, and gRPC/gNMI streaming telemetry. The system has ready integrations with automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, and Chef.
  • Professional-Class Documentation: Instead of experiments, the client receives ready validation guides (equivalents of Cisco Validated Designs) created in collaboration with IP Infusion, UfiSpace, and chipset manufacturers (Broadcom), which drastically shortens the project phase time (HLD/LLD).

Who Are These Solutions For?

The IP Infusion and UfiSpace ecosystem is the perfect choice for entities seeking uncompromising performance without overpaying for a brand:

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Where does UfiSpace equipment come from?

UfiSpace is a company based in Taiwan (New Taipei City). The entire process of designing and manufacturing devices takes place in Taiwan’s advanced technology ecosystem, ensuring high supply chain security and independence from suppliers in other geopolitical regions.

What is a Whitebox?

A Whitebox is an open network device (switch or router) whose hardware layer is completely separated from the software. Unlike traditional solutions (where you buy a “black box” from one manufacturer with a locked system), a whitebox provided by leaders like UfiSpace is a clean, high-performance hardware based on market processors (e.g., Broadcom ASIC). The client has full freedom to choose and install an independent network operating system (NOS), such as IP Infusion OcNOS, just as one installs Windows or Linux on a standard PC server.

UfiSpace and EdgeCore – are not limited to OcNOS – individual devices are compatible and supported by several (sic!) commercial and Community/Free solutions.

Do IP Infusion and UfiSpace solutions have deployments in Europe and Poland?

Yes, the OcNOS system operates globally in over 600 commercial networks. In Europe, these solutions are used by telecommunications operators (e.g., in the UK, Germany, Italy) and Tier-2/Tier-3 data centers. In Poland, the platform is quickly gaining market among wholesale operators, local ISPs, and newly built Data Centers. IP Infusion has a dedicated engineering team located in Poland, ensuring efficient on-site technical support and over 180 deployments of these solutions. We know this well.

Are UfiSpace solutions compliant with OpenZR+? Can we use modern coherent modules, WDM/DWDM?

UfiSpace supports and actively develops OpenZR+ support in products as an open supplier. With clear information about power per port (e.g., QSFP-DD), we can choose multi-watt modules or enjoy 4.5W 100G modules for long distances. The ports support 100G/200G split on 400G ports, providing flexibility. We also support modules with optical amplifiers, in addition to classic BiDir/WDM and DWDM modules.

Does the OcNOS software support L2VPN mechanisms such as VPLS and VPWS? What about IS-IS?

Yes. The OcNOS system in the Service Provider version (OcNOS-SP) fully supports L2VPN technology—both point-to-point connections (VPWS / Martini and Compella) and multipoint (VPLS) based on LDP/BGP. Moreover, the system natively supports modern EVPN technology (over MPLS and VXLAN), enabling smooth migration from older protocols to modern switching and routing architectures.
IS-IS is also supported, demonstrating that OcNOS checks and implements everything that ensures interoperability with other devices. It is a truly open architecture.

What is FlexE and in what scenarios is it used?

FlexE (Flexible Ethernet) is a technology that enables dynamic mapping and flexible management of bandwidth at the physical layer (PHY). Its main application is hardware traffic isolation (so-called hard slicing) in 5G xHaul transport networks, allowing complete separation of high-priority traffic (e.g., industrial URLLC) from standard consumer bandwidth. It is also used in data center interconnections (DCI) for flexible channel bonding (e.g., 300G from three 100G links) without the overhead of LAG aggregation in higher layers.

When designing a Data Center, can I choose the cooling direction in switches?

Yes. Top-of-Rack (TOR) devices from UfiSpace are ordered under specific SKUs that specify the direction of airflow. Front-to-Back versions (air drawn from the port side) and Back-to-Front versions (air pushed from the port side) are available, allowing perfect adaptation of devices to cold/hot aisles in server racks. Fans and power supplies are Hot-Swap modules (replaceable on the fly).

Can an UfiSpace device mix AC and DC power supplies?

No. Although hardware platforms have redundant power slots in a 1+1 configuration, the manufacturer strictly requires the installation of two power supplies of the same type (2x AC or 2x DC). Mixing power units with different electrical characteristics is prohibited due to the architecture of the internal power distribution board and monitoring mechanisms by the BMC controller.

Are there compact switches with SyncE and IEEE 1588v2 support for 5G O-RAN networks in the offer?

Yes. For small 5G O-RAN deployments, gNodeB installations, or private networks, devices from the UfiSpace S9500 series (e.g., compact cellular routers) are dedicated. They offer a small number of high-throughput ports (e.g., 4 to 8 ports 10G/25G SFP28). They are equipped with precise Stratum 3E oscillators (OCXO) that hardware support SyncE and IEEE 1588v2 (PTP) profiles, meeting strict Class C and Class D phase accuracy standards (below 100 ns).

Does the OcNOS system provide APIs for automation?

Yes. OcNOS was designed from the ground up as a fully programmable system. In addition to the standard, intuitive CLI interface (compliant with market standards), the system offers full support for NETCONF and RESTCONF programming interfaces with YANG data models (including OpenConfig). For telemetry and real-time device status monitoring, it provides a modern gRPC/gNMI mechanism. The system also has official and ready modules for integration with automation tools such as Ansible.

Are CVD-type reference documents available for IP Infusion solutions?

Yes. IP Infusion, along with its hardware partners (UfiSpace, Edgecore) and ASIC processor manufacturers (Broadcom), provides official deployment guides: “Validated Design Guides” and “Deployment Guides.” These are the exact equivalent of CVD (Cisco Validated Designs) documents. You will find ready, lab-tested configuration schemes for Leaf-Spine structures (BGP EVPN-VXLAN) in data centers and aggregation and backbone networks in Segment Routing architecture, significantly speeding up the network design process (HLD/LLD).
